For Real) is a relationship class that builds on couple participants’ existing strengths and adds critical life and relationship skills to create safer, more stable unions that help heighten the quality of life.
What guarantees relationship success? While there are many factors, building skills is one very overlooked technique. Family & Children’s Services new class, Within My Reach (formerly Forever. For Real), helps couple carve out time to work on these skills … and it’s FREE.
Within My Reach is for everyone: Single, dating or married for 50 years.
Dan Ulberg has been teaching at F&CS since 2006 after working as a Child Support Specialist. “Most of us didn’t see how healthy relationships growing up. Are you able to argue in front of kids without them knowing? Why is there yelling? Most of us think the relationship will be perfect and when it isn’t, our expectations are crushed,” he said.
The goal of the class is to develop healthy relationships, partnerships where you are able to communicate your needs and wants without fear of having your emotions squashed. The class helps with a commitment to do whatever it takes to make it last, knowing that divorce isn’t a word that should be spoken.
Ulburg said, “At the beginning of a new relationship, chemicals that are going on and couples may not think as hard about the tough questions and instead, jump into things and then wake up one day realizing they are not with the right person.”
Most of the curriculum focuses on communication, reflective listening, problem solving, forgiveness and more. You will learn how to communicate what your needs and wants are so they aren’t guessing.
Ulburg said, “Change is hard. I think the biggest obstacle for people is getting the tools and continuing to use them. In a couple weeks when classes are over people tend to forget.”
People leave this fun class better equipped with skills for their future. “My favorite thing about teaching is that I get to see change and I get to see people and the connection between couples and how much closer they get toward the end. It’s pretty cool,” Ulberg explained.
Within My Reach is a free five-week course. When completed, certificates are presented and can be used to receive $45 off a marriage license. The certificate is good for one year.
