Erin Pickens
Case Manager, Live Well
Which branch of the military did you serve in, and why did you choose it?
I served in the Navy. Joined straight out of high school so I could travel the world and be out on the water. Admittedly, I loved the look of the blue camouflage too.
What skills or values from your military service do you find most useful in your current role?
The military taught me versatility, how to use diversity as a strength, and how to lead, talk and get along with people of all backgrounds, personalities and cultures.
What brought you to FCS?
I learned through a friend of a friend that FCS provides the opportunity to serve the people in our community through case management while working on degrees and having the functionality to earn hours towards a license with that work, internship opportunities and flexibility to move into different roles.
What does Veterans Day mean to you personally?
It’s a day of pride. I miss the camaraderie while I was active duty, so Veterans Day gives me an opportunity to connect with other veterans and feel connected again to that decade of my life. It’s important, too, I think. I like to recognize others service because without Americans who continue to serve and protect us, where would we be? Our way of life could be drastically worse.
How has your military experience influenced your career and life today?
I’m so many ways. It shaped me. I’m a hard worker, but I know how to enjoy life outside of work, too. I love helping people and serving others. I love teamwork. I love getting my hands dirty and doing the physical work to get a job done. I appreciate different cultures and love people in general.
