Cornelius Johnson
Therapist, Adult Mental Health, NAVIGATE
How did you get started in the field?
I became a therapist after a career as a retired Army Officer and as an attorney. I was at a stage in my life when I was seeking new venues and challenges and was advised to look into the Social Work field by a friend of mine at the VA. I applied for and was accepted into the OU Tulsa MSW program and have never regretted that decision!
Why did you go into social work?
At first, I was drawn to Social Work to help my fellow Combat Veterans, myself having served two tours in Iraq. Later, after my internship at the VA Hospital in Muskogee, I became aware of other areas and other underserved communities, whom I could serve.
What do you love about your job?
You never know what will happen. My clients all struggle with psychosis, and I find helping them to be very rewarding. I have learned a lot from them and my fellow clinicians.
